The test has been created and is administered by the ETS or Educational Testing Service. The GRE is used by most schools to test your eligibility as a candidate for their programme. The test will examine the quantitative analytics, critical reasoning and verbal and writing skills of a candidate through its test papers. The test comprises of three sections – the first of which is the Analytical Writing section. This is followed by the Verbal and Quantitative assessment section. The test is a computer adaptive type and the difficulty level of the answers depend on how you perform on the questions put before you.

The cost of the test is $160. On registering for the test, you are given test preparation software, which is quite basic, almost instantly. The above mentioned cost includes the cost for sending you scores to four colleges. In case you wish to send you scores to more colleges, you will be charged $23 per college. However, if in case, you are not in a situation where you cannot afford the expenditure, you will have to demonstrate your difficulty to have the fees reduced.

  • What are the other things that I need to keep in mind about the GRE?

The GRE is strictly time based and fixed time is stipulated for each section. While taking the test, you will be required to spend 45 minutes on an issue based essay, 30 minutes on an argument based essay, 30 minutes on verbal reasoning and 45 minutes on the quantitative section. You will not be allowed the use of calculators. The first ten minutes of your test are most crucial as the computer decides your skill level depending on your initial answers.
